Flag Fabrics for Sublimation Printing: The Complete Guide

Category: Digital Printing | Reading time: approx. 5 minutes

Flag fabrics for sublimation printing are among the most requested textiles in the wide-format printing industry. Whether you’re producing beach flags, trade show banners, or national flags — choosing the right flag fabric determines colour brilliance, durability, and print quality.

As a German manufacturer of flag fabrics for digital printing, we answer the most common questions from industry practice.

What Makes a Good Flag Fabric?

A high-quality flag fabric must meet several requirements simultaneously:

  • Colour brilliance — maximum colour depth and sharpness for sublimation printing
  • Wind permeability — so the flag doesn’t tear in outdoor conditions
  • Dimensional stability — consistent width and length for reproducible results
  • Lightweight — low weight for good flutter behaviour
  • Durability — UV resistance and colour fastness even after long outdoor use

GOF flag fabrics meet all these requirements — as a globally used standard for consistent, reproducible print results.

Which Printing Processes Work with Flag Fabrics?

Sublimation Printing (Transfer and Direct) By far the most common process for flag fabrics. Colours are transferred directly into the polyester fibres — the result is vibrant, wash-resistant colours that won’t peel or fade. GOF flag fabrics are specifically optimised for sublimation printing.

Direct Printing with Sublimation Inks For wide-format printers that print directly onto the textile. Requires a special coating — GOF offers adapted variants for this application.

Screen Printing For specific applications such as national flags or large print runs. GOF offers specially developed heavyweight flag fabrics for this purpose.

Single-Sided or Double-Sided — What’s the Difference?

Single-Sided Flag Fabrics Standard for most flag applications. The print shows through slightly — for beach flags and feather flags this is intentional, as the flag is visible from all sides.

Double-Sided Printable Flag Fabrics With an integrated middle layer that prevents ink bleed-through. Ideal for:

  • Ceremonial flags where front and back must look identical
  • Applications where show-through is not desired
  • Combinations with a blockout effect

Sustainable Flag Fabrics — the CiCLO® Variants

GOF is one of the first manufacturers to offer flag fabrics with CiCLO® technology. This means:

  • The fabric contains a bioactive additive that accelerates the breakdown of microplastics
  • Identical print properties to the standard flag fabric
  • Certified and verifiable — no greenwashing
  • Ideal for customers with sustainability requirements or ESG reporting obligations

The CiCLO® flag fabrics offer all the benefits of the proven JetFlag, but produce significantly less microplastic.

Which Weight Is Right for Which Application?

The fabric weight (g/m²) is crucial for the intended use:

Weight Application
approx. 110 g/m² Standard flag fabric, beach flags, feather flags
approx. 115 g/m² Structured flag fabric for direct printing
Heavyweight Screen printing, national flags

Lighter fabrics flutter better in the wind. Heavier fabrics hang more calmly — ideal for ceremonial flags in indoor settings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flag Fabrics

Which GOF flag fabric is the best-seller? The JetFlag (6043K) is the global standard — used by print shops on every continent for consistent, reproducible print results.

Can flag fabrics be used for beach flags? Yes. For beach flags and feather flags, lightweight fabrics around 110 g/m² with good wind permeability are recommended. GOF offers specially developed variants for this application.

Are GOF flag fabrics OEKO-TEX certified? Yes. GOF flag fabrics are certified with STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX (Product Class 2, skin contact).

What stock widths are available? GOF flag fabrics are available in stock widths from 150 cm. For large-format applications, widths up to 320 cm are available.

What is the difference between transfer and direct sublimation? In transfer printing, the design is first printed onto transfer paper and then transferred to the fabric using a heat press. In direct printing, the ink is applied directly to the textile — saving a production step and being more sustainable.

Are flag fabrics available in black? Yes. GOF offers standard flag fabrics in black — ideal for dark backgrounds in trade show and event applications.
